Beyond The Pages: Unleashing AI Chatbots to Elevate ELA Learning

As I gear up to co-present at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in June 2024 in Denver, CO, my journey with AI chatbots in education takes center stage. This adventure, enriched by my daily engagements with ChatGPT and the creation of innovative GPTs like ScriptQuest and the Educator's Prompt Assistant (EPA), has been a beacon in navigating the integration of AI into English Language Arts.

Reflecting on "How a Holden Caulfield Chatbot Helped My Students Develop AI Literacy"

An article that significantly resonated with me during this explorative journey was Mike Kentz's "How a Holden Caulfield Chatbot Helped My Students Develop AI Literacy," published on February 9, 2024. Kentz's exploration of using a Holden Caulfield chatbot to enhance AI literacy among students highlighted the potential of AI chatbots as educational tools and gateways to deeper engagement and understanding. It underscored the transformative power of integrating AI into teaching methodologies, a theme that deeply aligns with my initiatives in ELA.

Bridging Classics and AI: Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet Chatbots

Creating Mizou chatbots for "The Odyssey" and "Romeo and Juliet," embedded directly into my teacher/student website, represents a pivotal moment in my educational journey. These chatbots offer students a unique interactive experience, allowing them to engage directly with the narratives and characters of these timeless classics. By facilitating a dialogic engagement with literature, these AI tools have opened up new avenues for understanding, making the leap from passive reading to active interaction.

ScriptQuest and EPA: Pioneering Tools for Instructional Design

With ScriptQuest and the Educator's Prompt Assistant (EPA), I ventured further into the possibilities of AI in education. ScriptQuest serves as a narrative framework for creating interactive training video scripts, while EPA aids educators in developing effective prompts. These tools, available through their respective links, ScriptQuest and Educator's Prompt Assistant, exemplify the innovative use of GPTs in crafting engaging and pedagogically sound educational content.

Looking Ahead: ISTE 2024 and Beyond

As the ISTE 2024 conference approaches, I am eager to share these insights and tools with a broader audience, showcasing the impactful integration of AI chatbots in education. This platform presents an unparalleled opportunity to discuss the practical applications, challenges, and successes of using AI to enhance learning experiences in ELA and beyond.

In embracing AI, we open the door to a future where education is not just about imparting knowledge but about fostering a deeper connection with learning materials. As educators, our journey with AI is just beginning, and the possibilities are as boundless as our imagination.
